Entry 5: De Stiji and Board game

Entry 5: Destill and Board game

For this week this blog will host three different posts instead of one.  The Destil movement is very interesting. With very simple colors the artist can convey so many meanings. This movement was started in the Netherlands in 1917 by Theo van Doesburg A.K.A C.E.M Kupper. It was characterized by universal laws of balance. They worked in abstract geometry. The photo above is of the book cover of  The essence of De Stiji is conveyed. I chose this as it was designed by the founder himself along with Laszio Moholy-Nagy. It has common de Stiji color palette-red, yellow, blue, and black. It is interesting given that the De Stiji used what we now know as primary colors.

This simple arrangement of colors reminds me of the basic layout of board games such as Partizi and Monopoly. The games has simple titles on the board games. From what I can remember basic colored colored titles are place in the four corners of the map. The currency in the game also has simple colors. The designs vary with each version of the game but it is still simple. The basic design may have been influence by the movement as the original Monopoly game we know today was published by Hasbro in 1935. The picture on the side is of the Monopoly game I have at home. It has a simple design with a color scheme of black and red.
